- "Now, nobody wants to hear that more than me, but…this mug, sure, it's nasty, but it's good at other stuff, too…y'know, like whalin' on the kind of guys that need whalin' on."
- ―Ben Grimm[src]
Benjamin "Ben" Grimm (aka "The Thing") is a founding member of the Fantastic Four. Mutated by a malfunctioned quantum teleporter created by his close friend Reed Richards, Ben's body is entirely covered with an orange, flexible, rock-like hide. He is known for his famous battle cry, "It's clobberin' time!"
Ben Grimm had known and befriend Reed Richards in university. He was present during the testing of Reed's quantum teleporter that was unknowingly tampered by Victor van Damme. After the teleporter was activated, it gave Ben along with Reed, Susan and Johnny Storm inhuman abilities. Ben had been altered the worst by the teleporter, as he is turned into a titanic, almost golem-like creature of living orange rock with superhuman strength, with his green eyes the only trait that remained of his human form.
Following the incident, Ben had joined Reed and the Storm siblings as a team that became known as the Fantastic Four. Ben had adjusted to his new form, but Reed had promised to find a way to cure him; a promise Reed had every intention of keeping. Ben also developed a brotherly-like relationship with Johnny Storm and gained romantic affections from Alicia Masters, a blind sculptress.
Ben and his team first encountered Superman while on the International Space Station in preparation to study a passing meteor shower. Superman helped the Four in repairing the damages to station caused by micro-meteor shower. In return for his help, Ben and the Four aided the Man of Steel and the X-Men in rescuing Nightcrawler and Forge from the Middleverse. Thereafter, Ben and his team learned of Superman's origins and agreed in keeping his Kryptonian origins a secret.
