Blade's mother was attacked by a vampire during the ninth month of her pregnancy, resulting in Blade being born with significant changes in his genetic make-up. When he reached puberty, his vampire physiology activated, resulting in him acquiring all the strengths of a vampire but none of their weaknesses, apart from the need to drink human blood. Going on the run, Blade eventually met Abraham Whistler, who developed a serum that would allow Blade to control his need to drink human blood, as well as providing Blade with weapons to fight the vampires.
Blade eventually met the Justice League when a group of vampires attacked a museum that the League had been staking out. Although Blade's willingness to kill his opponents brought him into initial conflict with the League, who preferred not to go that far, they were forced to work together when Blade's old adversary, Deacon Frost, attempted a ritual that would turn him into the personification of La Magra, the vampire blood god. Working with Superman, Blade managed to keep Frost occupied long enough to prevent the ritual being completed, resulting in Frost being destroyed by the sunlight when he was trapped outside a church with nowhere to reteat to the shade in time.
With their alliance concluded, Superman paid Blade and Whistler a final visit, informing them that, while he would stop Blade and Whistler from killing again if he saw them, he respected their right to wage their war, advising them to simply complete their work where he couldn't see them. He went on to provide them with an opportunity to attack the vampiric Nocturnae Council after he deactivated the council's usual defences, Superman departing his own confrontation with the council as Blade arrived.
Powers & AbilitiesEdit
Due to the unique circumstances of his birth, Blade possesses the strength, speed, agility, longevity, and healing factor of a powerful vampire, while lacking their traditional weaknesses to silver, garlic and sunlight. His only notable weakness is the need to drink human blood, which requires him to use a serum developed by his ally, Abraham Whistler, to avoid him succumbing to his urges and attacking innocent people. He has extensive training in hand-to-hand combat and with various weapons, including the sword that serves as his weapon of choice.
