Nicholas "Nick" Fury is the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D..
Nick Fury had been active during World War II and led a military unit called the Howling Commandos. During the conflict, Fury became acquainted to Logan, who would became Wolverine, Captain America, and Namor. Given his amazing war record in leading the Howling Commandos, Fury was selected for a government project and was inoculated with the Infinity Formula that slowed down his aging process; in which the U.S. government felt having Fury around for the next several decades would benefit their military and readily facing other unnatural threats.
By the 21st Century, Fury was appointed as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the rank of Brigadier General. He was responsible for finding Captain America's frozen body in the North Atlantic and thawed him from cryo-stasis, and forming the Avengers team. He also ensured in keeping the existence of mutants from the general public and usually helped Professor Charles Xavier and the X-Men on occasions.
Fury has a particular interest on one of Xavier's students, Superman. Ever since Superman had been discreetly helping the world, Fury was cautious of his capabilities that stands out beyond the known most powerful mutants while not realizing at the time of his alien origins. Regardless of his view on Superman, Fury see some good in him.
